Working together to create great theater

Opening April 16th, Paula Vogel's haunting coming of age tale, How I Learned to Drive

“How I Learned To Drive” is the story of Li’l Bit, and playwright PaulaVogel has created in her one of the richest and most appealing female protagonists in contemporary literature. The play focuses on her progress between the ages of 13 and 18. Her intellectual and physical development are both accelerated and she is on her way to becoming a young woman of considerable potential. Lacking a father at home, her uncle Peck steps in to counsel her and teach her things, like how to drive (hence the title). They are both in their way somewhat troubled individuals, and they find some comfort in each other’s company. Can they become close without crossing a line?

Steve Jarrard, who previously directed “The Food Chain” for Collaborative Artists Ensemble, helms the cast of “How I Learned To Drive.”

Starring:  Barbara Keegan, Luke Lizadle, Robert Ross, Deborah Venegas and Meg Wallace

Paula Vogel won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize and the Lortel, Drama Desk, Obie, Outer Critics Circle , and New York Drama Critics Awards for this play. It appears in the anthology “The Mammary Plays,” published by Theatre Communications Group. Her other plays include “The Baltimore Waltz,” ‘Hot n’ Throbbing,” “And Baby Makes Seven,”  “The Oldest Profession,” “Civil War Christmas,” and many more.
