The
Lucia of the title refers to Lucia Joyce, daughter of celebrated Irish
author James Joyce and his wife Nora, living in Paris. The madness stems
from her romantic obsession with Irish playwright Samuel Beckett, who
reveres James and seeks out his company. Beckett is limited in his ability
to express affection for a woman. In any event, he is not in love with
Lucia. He is in love with James’ literary gifts. Her growing frustration
descends into insanity, and her parents arrange for her to be analyzed
by the famed Dr. Carl Jung.
Lest
any of this seem too grim to be entertaining, Lucia, through all this,
manages to retain a fairly wicked sense of humor (as do, in fact, most
of the characters). The result is that “Lucia Mad” is a far funnier
play than one might initially expect.
James
Joyce is depicted as a somewhat needy and not entirely stable character
himself, suggesting perhaps a genetic basis for Lucia’s distress.
In any case, she is not receiving the attention she needs, from her
father nor from Beckett.
Naturally,
a play about famous writers contains observations about art, human relationships,
and especially love.
